Gladiator combat, fire eating and many more
The idea is to point at the importance of history and archaeology in tourism, as well as to foster culturo-touristic offer, at the same time contributing to an international promotion of the ancient Risan through presentation of culture and local Roman tradition
Gladiator combat with wooden practice swords and shields, tug of war, throwing in walnuts, Roman clothing sessions are the central part of this event.
The entertainment part of the event is consisted of Roman infantry presentation, gladiator combat, fire-eating, Roman hairdressing session.
The main show is Diocletian’s legionaries display, performed by Udruženje iz Splita, mostly consisted of 16 to 18 performers, dressed in authentic centurion, flag-bearer and legionary costumes.
Roman heavy infantry was divided into units called legions, consisted of soldiers (legionaries). Every legion was representing a Roman province that used to protect the city from enemies. Legions were divided in centurias commanded by a centurion. Flag-bearer carried the flag of the legion. All mentioned roles are symbolically represented during the Roman Night.
Legionaries are performing their show along the Risan promenade, by marching, displaying military formations and standing. On centurion’s command military formations are displayed, and the lines are pronounced in Latin. Marching is accompanied by military exclamations.
After this show, visitors watch gladiator combat with the practice equipment, which is at the same time the most interesting part of the programme.
All different kinds of delicacies are offered to visitors at the end of the event.
